Have you ever had someone tell you your breath stinks? It’s not a great feeling. And yet 50 million Americans deal with halitosis (bad breath). Fortunately, the tips for fighting bad breath are simple.

Make sure that you brush your teeth twice per day. We recommend that all our patients brush their teeth at least twice daily. Brushing your teeth will improve the smell of your breath by dislodging odor-causing food particles and plaque.

Make time to floss every day. In addition to our recommendation that patients brush their teeth at least twice daily, we ask our patients to floss between their teeth daily. Flossing is an important part of freshening breath because it removes lodged debris that can cause plaque and bacteria build-up, which create oral odors.

Try scraping your tongue with a tongue scraper. Using a tongue scraper can help improve the smell of your breath, as well as the health of your mouth. These inexpensive tools remove odor-causing build-up and bacteria from your tongue. If you don’t have a tongue scraper, brushing your tongue with your toothbrush can have a similar effect.

Remember to rinse with mouthwash. If you’re ready for fresher breath, mouthwash should be part of your oral health routine because they can destroy bacteria and mask your breath temporarily. Because this is just a quick fix, however, you’ll need to deep clean your mouth to address the root cause of the problem.
